RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW
Irish Performance Art
Kilmainham Gaol - Thursday 4th November 6-10pm
and
Symposium

Performance Art Live (P.A. Live) presents 'RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW' a live exhibition featuring some of Ireland's top contemporary artists working within the realm of performance art north and south of the Border. This unique event, curated by Amanda Coogan, Dominic Thorpe and Niamh Murphy will be held over one night, Thursday the 4th of November from 6pm, in the historic and powerful surroundings of Kilmainham Gaol, in Dublin.

Visitors to this free event will experience twenty leading live performance artists, performing simultaneously over a four hour period throughout the cells and open areas of Kilmainham Gaol’s East Wing. Many nationally and internationally acclaimed artists will be performing on the night including Alastair MacLennan, a renowned and leading practitioner of performance art since the seventies. Mac Lennan’s work has influenced many live artists working today and in his own words he admires artists “who overcome the most, within and without themselves, 'take on' the human condition, and who (in effective art) comment on political and social corruption.”

Other artists performing live on the night are, Aine Phillips, Amanda Coogan, Brian Connolly, Dominic Thorpe, Declan Rooney, Frances Mezzetti, Brian Patterson, Sinead McCann, Catherine Barragry, Fergus Byrne, Michelle Browne, Ann Maria Healy, Helena Walshe, Francis Fay, Pauline Cummins, Victoria Mc Cormack, Alex Conway, Sandra Johnston, Meabh Redmond and Niamh Murphy.

This is a free event organised by Performance Art Live (P.A. Live) kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland in association with the office of Public Works (OPW). P.A. Live was set up in 2009 and is committed to the promotion of performance art in Ireland.

A live performance exhibition at Kilmainham Gaol

It is with this lineage to our practice and the weight of history in Kilmainham Gaol that we hold Right Here, Right Now there. We are interested in the role visual art has taken as a means to a broader dialogue with Kilmainham as a national monument, a site for the evaluation and re-evaluation of our past, present and future. As Pat Cooke has described; ‘Only if Kilmainham Gaol remains a place driven by a spirit of experimentation can it remain inclusively engaged with the evolving exploration of identity and difference in Ireland’. It is in this spirit of experimentation the artists in Right Here, Right Now will respond to Kilmainham Gaol as a place where history and contemporary life continue to collide.
